  • Pulses

India is the world's largest producer and consumer of pulses, with a 25% share in global production. Among the many varieties grown in India, Chickpea, Moong dal, Urad dal and Toor dal are the major pulses both in terms of acreage and production. Altogether, they contribute to 80% of the total domestic production of pulses.

The pulses produced in India include:

    • - Moong Dal (whole and with skin)
    • - Urad Dal (whole and with skin)
    • - Moth Dal
    • - Black Eyed Beans
    • - Chickpeas
    • - Channa Dal
    • - Toor Dal
    • - Masoor Dal

Domestic consumption is very high in India and often exceeds domestic production. India is a large importer of pulses bringing in 2.5 to 3 million Mt annually. Canada, Australia and Burma are the main suppliers to India.

Chickpeas are the most exported of all pulses. Occasionally, red lentils are also exported when there is surplus over domestic requirement.
